ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
2 Corinthians 8:13-15
13Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”
One Great Hour of Sharing, the Lenten Offering given annually by the United Church of Christ to benefit works with international partners, presents a wonderful opportunity for Desert Heritage Church to continue to live the gospel. We can join the United Church of Christ, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and six other denominations in this special mission offering to benefit people in 138 countries.
- What exactly does the fund do?
This fund provides resources for clean water, food, education, health care, small business seed money, emergency relief, advocacy and settlement of refugees and displaced persons. An example of how this fund has been used can be seen in the ongoing relief efforts by the UCC in Haiti after the devastation caused by the hurricane in 2008.
- What percentage of our donation will be used directly for mission?
Of every dollar given on average, 91 cents is used directly for mission, 5 cents for interpretations materials, and 4 cents for administrative costs which include program monitoring and evaluation (for accountability). Most administrative costs are paid by gifts to Our Church’s Wider Mission National Basic Support and endowment funds.
