Weekly Wacky Welcome – December 14, 2014

3763Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas.  The “X” comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, which comes into English as “Christ”.

There is also a common misconception that the word Xmas stems from a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas by taking the “Christ” out of “Christmas”, but its use dates back hundreds of years.

In fact, early Christians used the symbol “X” to represent Christ.  If talking to a stranger on the road, one could make an “X” in the dirt and it was secret code for asking, “Are you a Christian?”

I say, “Let’s put the X (Christ) back in Xmas!”

That is, let’s feed the hungry forgive the guilty, love the enemy, see the best in each one, never discriminate, make room for the undocumented, provide healthcare for the sick, support for the marginalized, and opportunity for the disadvantaged.

I could go on and on.  I think you get the idea.  Put Christ in Xmas and you will be blessed!
