Weekly Wacky Welcome – January 10, 2016

Willoughby

There was a dog that had a compulsive, eccentric habit. Whenever he got a bone, he spent the rest of the day in a flurry of activity. Whether he was motivated by instinct or his own peculiar quirkiness or some combination of the two is hard to say.

Given a bone, he commenced a search through the house for a suitable place to bury it. Once he settled on a spot, he proceeded to “dig” a hole in the linoleum. Undaunted by the fact that all his furious digging scarcely left a scuff on the floor, he carefully placed his bone in his imaginary hole. Next he painstakingly nosed imaginary dirt over it and then turned himself around to kick some more for good measure.

It was at this point, when he inspected his work, that he appeared to realize something was amiss. His prize was not sufficiently buried and, in fact, was in plain sight. So he picked it back up and hunted for a better spot. And thus the cycle repeats over and over again until it’s time for a nap.

Before we laugh, however, I wonder if there is some of this craziness in us, too. Are there things that we do over and over out of a compulsion we don’t understand — things that are equally unproductive? Things like wearing ourselves out trying to impress other people. Or how about chasing after things that never satisfy. Or maybe it’s just a cycle of busyness that doesn’t really get us anywhere.

Sometimes I wonder, but then it’s time for my nap.

Shalom,

Paul
