Patriotism isn’t easy. I have some things to say to the country I love…
When our country that we love…

  • refuses to love its own people—let us be the light to shine forth that love.
  • makes policies that discriminate against the poor, gays, the unemployed, those who are differently abled, and the “downtroddened”, let us be the light to shine forth compassion and inclusiveness.
  •  has politicians seeking only re- election and not the people’s welfare, let us be the light to shine forth that demands justice and a change in priorities.
  • demands punitive rather than reformative actions, let us be the light to shine forth God’s grace.
  • demands its own way or no way in worldly issues, let us be the light to shine forth true dialogue.
  • doesn’t stand up to terrorism or human rights’ violators, let us be the light to shine forth courage.
  • takes advantage of poor countries in the world, let us be the light to shine forth equity.
  • has lost its direction, let us be the light to shine forth a vision of grace, of justice, and of inclusiveness of what we can and will be.

Shalom,

Paul
