Are we willing to let God explode our comfort zone and expand our capacity for learning, love, giving and service?
I think a lot of the time we want a God we can manage and control—just enough God to make us happy, but not enough God to truly change us or transform us. Our attitude is just what Wilbur Rees had in mind when he wrote:
“I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please, not enough to explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but just enough to equal a cup of warm milk or a snooze in the sunshine. I don’t want enough of [God] to make me love a black man or pick beets with a migrant. I want ecstasy, not transformation; I want the warmth of the womb, not a new birth. I want a pound of the Eternal in a paper sack. I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please.”
Wow! That’s profound stuff! My experience tells me that God just doesn’t work that way. God is not on the market shelf in manageable, bargain-size portions. Further, we can’t use fifty cent coupons to get a better deal. And there’s no senior discount, either! God is not on the market for us to buy! And, in fact, God is not looking for buyers; God is looking to buy you and me. God wants people who give themselves totally to God. Not one-half or even three-fourths, but all the way. God wants our total liquidation. And God doesn’t barter. God is not looking to please. God has already paid the price for us. God’s precious child, Jesus, died on the cross to pay our debt.
