I confess that I love Pope Francis. I love his progressive voice, his compassion for the poor, and his willingness to change the status quo in the church.
Having met Pope John Paul II, many years ago, I have a special place in my heart for him, too. My college choir sang on Vatican Radio and TV back in 1983. We also got to met the pope. There were two formations for our choir to line up in—one put me in the back, the other put me front and center. I’ll give you three guesses as to which one I shouted out when we went on stage—I wanted to be front and center!
Then Pope John Paul II came and stood right in front of me. Literally right up against me. I did what I thought best; I patted him on the back! No kidding! After the group photo he turned and grabbed both of my hands and I kissed his ring.
John Paul II took the church in a new and exciting direction—so is Pope Francis. I pray he will continue his progressive movement within the Catholic Church. The church still has a long way to go on equal rights for the LGTBQ community and for women. God is still speaking!
